Recycling in Maryland

The Maryland Recycling Act (MRA) requires all Counties and Baltimore City to recycle 15% or 20% of their municipal solid waste, depending on population.  State government (including MDE) is required to recycle 20% of their solid waste.  MDE's Recycling Program assists Counties and State agencies in their efforts to divert materials from landfills through various means.  These include providing technical assistance and education directly to the Counties, working with other State agencies to increase their volume of materials recycled, and working with the Department of Business and Economic Development and the Maryland Environmental Service to develop markets for recyclable materials.
